Webtown moved the RSPCA's paper-based educational content onto a Liferay-based platform, increasing student engagement by 38 percentage points.

The RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is the world's oldest and largest animal welfare charity. Since 1824, it has worked to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals across England and Wales. The RSPCA is one of the largest charities in the UK, with a turnover of £140 million and 1,800 employees.

For a long time, the organization's educational work relied on paper-based materials: teachers and students worked from PDF documents covering animal welfare topics. This model increasingly struggled to keep pace with the demands of digital education - content was difficult to update, and student engagement fell short of what an interactive platform could offer.

As Webtown's Liferay-based development partner, we built an entirely new digital learning platform that moved the previous PDF-based content onto an interactive, easy-to-use interface. The platform's goal was to give teachers access to live, continuously updatable teaching materials, while offering students a modern, engaging way to explore animal welfare topics.

The result speaks for itself: student engagement rose from 40% to 78%, a 38 percentage point increase.

"We're delighted with the results we've achieved. Based on feedback from teachers, students are far more actively engaged in lessons since we introduced the new platform," said Lee Read, Project Lead for Prevention Education at the RSPCA.

Vanessa Sparkes, Programme Manager for Digital Transformation at the RSPCA, added: "Working with the Webtown team allowed us to turn an outdated model into a truly forward-looking educational tool."

The project was completed in 2022.
